"Another Freedom We May Lose: If We Don't Act!"
Back to Full Blog

The Threat is real! How Does This Threat To Internet Freedom Affect You? An Enlightening List

This is just the beginning. Cable and telco giants want to eliminate the Internet's open road in favor of a tollway that protects their status quo while stifling new ideas and innovation. If they get their way, they'll shut down the free flow of information and dictate how you use the Internet.

The SavetheInternet.com Coalition is made up of groups from across the political spectrum that have banded together to save the First Amendment of the Internet: network neutrality. No corporation or political party is funding these efforts.

Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment-- a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which web sites work best for you--based on what site pays them the most. If the public doesn't speak up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign.

Hi Solid! I hope you have a lovely day. It's getting warm here, it's spring so it's just beautiful. I'm glad things are cooling down there, it's been an incredably hot summer for you guys. I have a siamese fighting fish who has to have the light on all the time when it's cold so he doesn't sink to the bottom and forget to breathe. So when the whether warms up i won't have to have the light on. We've taken the doona off the bed now so when we first get into bed we kick off the covers but during the chill in the morning we pull them back on us to keep warm.

I'm sorry, when i get upset i talk a LOT and i'm a tad upset now. Our eldest son is starting to teach. He has gained a position in a school near by and will do the last term there and start afresh in the first term of next year after Christmas. I'm going to stop talking now. Have a great week and... oh yeah... i love you heaps...

Guess they want to make it an elitist activity. We are a capitalist society gone nuts. I never visit sites that require payment. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. --deby

Hi Solid,

Don't let savetheinternet's far fetched assertions scare you! Scott Cleland, an expert on the issue, presented the facts yesterday at the VON conference in Boston. Cleland says the net isn't neutral today, as the "net neutrality" term would like you to believe.

Savetheinternet's goal is to create a problem when the reality is there isn't one. I work with Hands Off The Internet Coalition and we are trying to give people the real story. Don't get sucked into the drama created by Google, Amazon and eBay!

More information is available on Cleland's blog: http://www.precursorblog.com/node/162

or the Hands Off blog at http://www.handsoff.org

Hi HandsFree,

There is nothing far fetched, (in my opinion regarding yet another attempt by the Right and Powerful,) in refusing to be swayed and silenced by "Hands Off" or in your opinion, the expert, Scott Cleland, regarding the stories no one wants to hear.

So, let's call it what it is, shall we?

Hands off supports "government regulation" as long as it benefits large telecom & cable companies!
They "bunk" with Big Bro!!!

And didn't Scott Cleland serve as DAS of S for telecom trade with another heavy hitter, George H. W. Bush? And also happens to spew the same mantra, telling the American people to "Stay Vigilant?" AND, hoping while we're being once again, distracted, that we haven't figured out yet what this is really all about?

Even suggesting that this naivete concerning THEIR tactics of trying to scare away anyone who is willing to dig deep and come up with some real answers to this, is going to allow them to accomplish anything, well, I think better of the American public.

Hands Off clearly asks: "Join us and SAY NO to Government Regulation of the Internet."...while using every distraction possible to divert us from the real issues!!!!

And may I continue?

Doesn't Hands Off monopolize advertizing and information regarding NET NEUTRALITY????

DO continue to work with Hands Off, as is your right in every sense of the word, but please don't come onto my blog and try to even remotely suggest that I could be "sucked into THE drama" created by anyone you choose to mention!!!

Regarding Scott Cleland in a recent interview discussing Net Neutrality, the commentator goes on to say:
"The reason we are having this debate at this moment is that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), backed by a Supreme Court decision, decided to deregulate cable and DSL Internet services: in the process the old "common carrier" neutrality regulations will no longer apply when the order goes into effect (in about three months).

So until then companies are forbidden to descriminate against content providers, or applications users might choose, like Vonage or Skype for VoIP.
Congress might redo what the FCC undid, and I think telecom industry advocates like Scott Cleland are WORRIED they just might."

Just a tad bit of hypocrisy in what he claims he believes to be true, maybe???

I am for protecting free and equal, online speech. PERIOD!
And in the process, would like to see that the American people do not get RIPPED OFF ONCE AGAIN!!!!

When responding to this after reading, I clearly would have taken a different "tone" as I am all for "agreeing to disagree", but not when someone directively points a finger in assumptiions totally disregarding where I am coming from. Not to mention the closely resembling a ..."Know all Attitude" in the condescending tone of your message!

In closing, Welcome to BlogStream, as I noticed you signed up minutes before you commented here. Hugh!!!

Peace...Solid

Hands Free would do well to get some honesty and call himself Hands Tied, for that is precisely what this REGIME wants all around for us.

They have been pushing for this in one form or another for years. It's up to us to push back and say, HELL NO!!! WE pay for our internet access, keep your grubby hands off our free exchange of information!!!! The only ones to profit from this will be the government, in squelching info they don't want aired because it exposes their filthy doings, and corporations, who want to ram even more of their commercialized garbage down our throats and get even more of our hard earned money.

Thanks Ren for your input!! And yes it has been going on for some time. Devious attempts and even, surprisingly enough, openly at times admitting that this is an agenda their determined to see through until they have stolen yet another of our freedoms!!

The only ones to profit from this is YES..the government!

United we stand!!

Peace and Much Love to you...Solid

Solid Ground:

That tactic used by "Hands Off" is one that is being used with some success in California politics. Every time someone wants to change California politics through Initiative process, some organization with a different agenda will try to hijack it in the media. Sometimes it works. I am pleased that you didn't let "Hands off" get away with it that tactic.

I knew that taking that first step and admitting that I was powerless...would get you over here!!
My vulnerablity just captured your heart, right Whit?

I agree that, "sometimes it works." And reminds me of a line I hold sacred..."Keep coming back, it works if you work it!"
How true these words are. I just choose not to fall prey to any more "gutter grime" as they've set up camp all around us, just waiting for a "clean shot."

That's why I keep my ears open and my blinds shut!

Thanks for the comment, Whit!!

laaaag, you'r just awooing me with that backwoods slanguage!!
And I just love the outdoorsy type!!!

I agree that..."perhaps this should become a raison d'etre for us all."
I pray that we all want to "need" a reason!!!

Thanks for "flavoring" what has become yet another "tasteless," insulting attempt to just...STRIP US RIGHT DOWN TO THE BARE BONE!!!

You know ^BELLE^, they really are SLB, and keeping up with their shenanigans is not always timely, on our parts... and don't you think they already know this?

They add a little "fear" here and there and a whole lot of 'distraction' and so far, they've been ahead of the game.

Good to see you!! Enjoy your Sunday!!!

What is amazing to me is that this free flowing information is far from free. The only thing free is the choice not to use it. There are all kinds of gimmics that are used to get your money. Yes I can say anything I want as long as I don't use profanity or pornagraphy, but free is has many definitions and with out cost doesn't ring true. TS
|<   <<   >>   >|

by Truth Seeker (PM , CC ) on Friday September 22, 2006 @ 8:06 PM

Oh yes TS, I agree. Just as we are and will continue to pay the consequences for others choices forced upon us.

The lists of Rights we have had trampled on us is long, and that is very, very sad!!!

Free Will to do, to believe, to act upon whatever we DO believe in!
This is what I personally, believe and live by!

And, no one can take that from me...ever!!!

I "own" my beliefs as do everyone else!!

So good to see you!! Thanks so much for coming over, I appreciate it!! You always have something to say that causes me to stop...and think!!

Peace My Friend...Solid
